Teflon Coating : To do or not to do.

Hi People, AD's here. All this while, I have blogged on different tips and tricks, but today let's get into a controversial topic. Teflon Coating : Should it be done or not ? Automobile Care Shops and Workshops will always suggest you to Teflon coat your car. But, do you really need to?
Let's get to know what Teflon Coating actually is.
Teflon : Teflon is a synthetic fluoropolymer, which when applied on your car's paint-job forms a clean, shiny and protective layer on the clearcoat. No doubt it protects your paintjob from UV Radiations and all, but it has its own cons.
Suppose you got a brand new car, you take it to some car care shop and they start teflon coating it. You will see some paste ( wax like substance ) being buffed on your paint with a DA ( Dual Action ) Polisher. You will smell something really obnoxious. But, then it vanishes and on buffing, you will see your car shining like anything. That's definitely a good point. Then you start your daily commute in the car and dust off and wash regularly and see you don't need to wax the car anymore, because it is teflon coated. One year pass by and then you see, your car starts to look dull. Obviously you have got a two year warranty on your cars teflon coat. So you take it back to the shop and they get it teflon coated once more for free. You see your car shining again. So, this is the story of a Teflon Coated car.
But, what about that dull look, after one year ? It's the scratched out clear-coat. When you got your car teflon coated for the first time, the DA polisher got your clear-coat ripped off with the harsh teflon material. So, eventually with daily wash and tear, when the teflon coat got depleted the scuffed out paint came out making it look dull.
Don't get me wrong, Teflon Coat is actually a good thing if you do daily commute in your car and raise your hand to spend some bucks every year to get it teflon coated once more. Your car will continue to shine, but once teflon coated, always teflon coated.
But, if you want to preserve your original paint-job for the cars lifetime and you vow to wax your car on a regular basis and polish it on time, never ever get it teflon coated. Your car will shine the same, when you work with your own hands. I shall tell you how to polish and wax properly on the next blog.
And in this case, you will not even scratch the original paintjob.
Now lets talk about the pros and cons of Teflon Coating :
Pros:
.You dont have to pay much attention to your cars paintjob. Once washed it will shine automatically.
.Dont have to care about swirls. Teflon is a hard layer. It will not invite swirl marks ever.
.You will save some serious Sunday laburs on your car. You wont need to wash it much actually.
. You will save some bucks on the Wax and Polishes.
Cons:
. Once teflon coated, there's nothing called clear-coat. The top layer is always your Teflon Coat. And you can never fix a Teflon Coat scratch on your own. You will need to take it back to a professional.
. Once teflon coated, you wont be able to polish or wax your car for taking your paint to the next level. The only thing you can actually depend on for the look of your car then, is a fast wash and the teflon coat.
. If your car meets any accident, and say you get a dent or deep scratch, you need to repaint certain areas, the teflon coat there is gone and your teflon warranty is also void. So, the next time you will need to pay for teflon coating the whole car all over again.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am not against Teflon Coating. I would suggest you to get your car teflon coated actually when you don't really have much time to look after and care for your car.
But, if you love to spend time with your car, if you are a Carhead, then, never get it teflon coated. Wax with your own hands, take care of your car and your car will look like new all the while.
Now, I shall keep the rest for you to decide. But, the last thing to say is, if you teflon coat your car, please get it done form some well known and dependable shop only. 3M provides the best service for this.
